Requesting a Tutor-Mentor

Interested students are invited to request a tutor/mentor by filling out the 'Student Request for Tutor/Mentor' form from the International Student Center at SDSU. Or, if you wish, please fill out the Student Request for Tutor/Mentor form on line.

All applicants must be currently enrolled and have their class schedule available. Submit the form immediately for processing.

Tutor/Mentor Assignment

After the form is processed, students are personally interviewed and their needs assessed before a tutor/mentor is assigned. Personal comfort, compatibility and availability of both are seriously taken into consideration.

Once an assignment is made, both the tutor/mentor and the student will be provided with each other's information to facilitate contact. If a student has been contacted but does not reply within 2 weeks, assignment maybe delayed or ultimately canceled.

Sessions

Tutoring sessions takes place when and where it is convenient for both parties. Possible meeting places include on-campus locations such as the International Student Center or off-campus such as a cafe or each other's homes.

Generally the tutor/mentor meets with the student once a week for an average of two hours. On occasion session times may be less than 2 hours or even skipped, such as during exam week. The time spent by both tutor/mentor and student depends mainly upon the comfort level and dedication of both.

A student may be assigned to the same tutor/mentor for a semester, a year or for as long as 4 years. The assignment mainly depends upon the tutor/mentor's availability and comfort level. Both tutors/mentors and students are free to discontinue with each other and/or the program at any time they wish.

Field trips, potluck get-togethers and holiday festivities are celebrated by students and their tutors/mentors during and at the end of each semester.
